The Meads Community Association works to preserve and enhance the character of Meads. It was formed in 1988; the catalyst was local resistance to the proposal to build flats on the sea front site of the All Saints Hospital and Chapel. Now we are pleased to see well designed apartments on the site.
Meads has a substantial Conservation Area, part of which is King Edward's Parade which dates from the 19th century. We also have a boundary with the South Downs National Park.
It is only through constant vigilance that so much of the unique character of Meads has remained relatively unspoiled. We continually review and challenge the most damaging proposals for local development. With the support of our members, residents and Councillors, we have successfully opposed many of them.
Our quarterly magazine Meads Matters (one of the benefits of membership), our Facebook page and occasional emails provide information on MCA events and items of current and historic local interest, together with a roundup of what's on in and around Meads. We are also taking the lead on various initiatives aimed at preserving, enhancing and improving Meads (referred to as Placemaking).
Our Affinity Card (one of the benefits of membership), encourages members to use local shops and services.
The MCA is non-political with a membership of more than 720 households. Activities and social events take place throughout the year and our Annual General Meeting is normally held in April when we review progress over the past year and discuss our future plans. The committee is elected annually at the AGM.
Our main functions are to:
- Monitor planning applications affecting Meads Ward
- Advise residents on planning procedures
- Attend and service planning committees and appeals to the planning committee
- Monitor proposals for roads, pavements, walling, verges and trees in our streets
- Protect, improve and enhance this unique and special place
