Meads' Tranquil Treasure: The Peace Garden

In the heart of Meads area, Eastbourne, lies a tranquil oasis known as the Peace Garden. This beautiful public space, encircling the historic Wish Tower, offers visitors a place for reflection and appreciation of the area's rich history. Situated between King Edwards Parade and the Lower Parade, adjacent to the Western Lawns, the garden occupies what was once the dry moat of the Wish Tower.
The story of the Peace Garden is deeply intertwined with Eastbourne's history. In 1961, the Wish Tower Cafe and Sun Lounge were built on this site as a memorial to the 180 civilians who lost their lives when Eastbourne faced heavy bombing during World War II. For years, this cafe stood as a reminder of the town's resilience and a tribute to those lost. However, as time passed, the structure fell into disrepair, leading to its eventual demolition in 2012.
The demolition of the cafe might have meant the loss of an important memorial, but a group of dedicated residents refused to let that happen. In 2016, they formed the Eastbourne Civilian War Memorial Trust with a vision to breathe new life into the neglected dry moat. Their goal was ambitious yet poignant: to create a space that would serve both as a memorial to those who perished and a celebration of the peace that followed the war.
This vision became reality as the Trust worked tirelessly to transform the area. They carefully designed and laid out the garden, bringing in a striking centerpiece - a boulder of Welsh granite. To this, they added a steel plaque bearing the names of the civilian casualties, ensuring that their memory would live on. The garden was officially opened in 2018, but the work didn't stop there. For the next two years, planting continued, gradually bringing color and life to this once-barren space.
By June 2020, with their mission accomplished, the Eastbourne Civilian War Memorial Trust closed its doors. But their legacy lives on. The Peace Garden was adopted by Eastbourne Borough Council as a public park, becoming the fourth park under the care of the Friends of Meads Parks and Gardens. This transition ensures that the garden will continue to be maintained and cherished for years to come.
Today, the Peace Garden stands as a testament to the Meads community's commitment to remembrance and peace. It offers a serene retreat for locals and visitors alike, providing a stark contrast to the bustling seaside attractions nearby. As you walk through the garden, you're invited to reflect on the sacrifices of the past and the precious gift of peace we've enjoyed for over seven decades.
Visiting the Peace Garden is a must for anyone exploring the Meads area. Its location near the Wish Tower makes it easily accessible, and it's an ideal stop during a walk along Eastbourne's famous coastline. Whether you're admiring Meads' spectacular Victorian architecture, participating in the renowned Triathlon events, or simply soaking in the area's outstanding natural beauty, the Peace Garden offers a moment of tranquility and reflection.
As you stand in this thoughtfully designed space, surrounded by carefully tended plants and the solemn memorial, you'll feel connected to Eastbourne's past and present. The Peace Garden is more than just a beautiful park; it's a living piece of history, a tribute to resilience, and a quiet reminder of the importance of peace.
